History of the Medical Alumni Association at LSU Health Shreveport
In 1998, Dr. Ike Muslow, the Dean of the medical school, funded a new initiative to build on earlier efforts to establish an alumni organization. He appointed an alumni advisory committee to assist with the task. The committee met several times and these meetings led to the establishment of an alumni office and staff position supported by the Dean and a formal organization for a Medical Alumni Association. David DeSha, PhD and Marianne Comegys, MLS agreed to serve as Co-Directors of the Association. An Executive Committee was formed to carry out the goals and projects established by the advisory committee.
In the first years, the Association focused on building its member database and making initial contact with each graduate. The newly formed Association published its first newsletter in 1999, held reunions for the classes of 1979 and 1989 and created a web presence. Over the years, the Association has continued to publish newsletters and plan 10, 20 and 30-year reunions for the alumni. Also, along the way, the association has contributed to several education projects including establishment of a computer lab in the library, support for examination rooms in the standardized patient area, purchase of teaching equipment for the simulation center and purchase of flat screen monitors for the small group study rooms. Additionally, the Association supports and participates in yearly events such as Family Day, the White Coat Ceremony, Camp Tiger, Match Day and the Freshmen Orientation Reception.
The Association looks forward to providing more benefits to alumni and current students and providing opportunities for alumni to share in the advancement of our institution in the years ahead.
