Published May 9, 2013 Our next Wellness Lunch and Learn will be held at East Ridge Country Club on Thursday, May 16th, at 11:30 AM. Featured speaker will be Dr. Destin R. Black. She will be speaking about the latest advancements in robotic surgery in the treatment of gynecologic cancer. Dr. Black is currently a Clinical Assistant Professor and Director of the Division of Gynecology/Oncology in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at LSU Health Shreveport. She graduated from LSU School of Medicine here in Shreveport, and completed her residency in OB/GYN at LSU Health Shreveport. She completed a four year fellowship at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York, New York in 2007. Dr. Black is a member of the American Medical Association and the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology. We are fortunate to have her on staff at LSU Health Shreveport and look forward to hearing her share her knowledge with us at the May Wellness Luncheon. We will also be showing one of the videos from An Evening for Heroes; a case that Dr. Black was involved in. It is quite an emotional story with a happy ending-so come out and see it and meet Dr. Black in person!

Published April 12, 2013 The Biomedical Research Foundation of Northwest Louisiana (BRF) and LSU Board of Supervisors, along with the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals have begun negotiations to form a partnership under which LSU Medical Center in Shreveport and EA Conway Medical Center in Monroe will be operated and managed by the BRF. Information about various aspects of the transition is now available on a website, www.shreveporthealthtransition.org. This website will be updated asinformation becomes available. Published February 19, 2013 Our next wellness luncheon will be held on Thursday, March 21st at Ristorante Giuseppe, in the Uptown Shopping Center on Line Avenue. The speaker will be Dr. Paula Click-Fenter, Associate Professor of Physical Therapy and a Geriatric Certified Specialist. She will be speaking on ways to improve your balance as you get older, and the importance that good balance has on your health. Come hear about the latest advances in the field of balance and geriatrics! There will be three entrees to choose from, and the meals will include iced tea, coffee, and fresh baked bread. Published December 14, 2012 Mini Med School for Winter 2013 is now full. If you would like to hear about the next scheduled session, contact Meg Willett: mwille@lsuhsc.edu or 318.675.8789. Thanks! Winter Session: Tuesdays: February 19 – March 19 Mini Med School is back again in 2013! Now expanded from four to five sessions, participants will learn about health topics of interest such as heart disease and Alzheimer’s, while exploring LSU Health Shreveport’s medical school and beyond. Chancellor Robert Barish and Dean Andrew Chesson will return as Mini Med professors along with Senior Associate Dean Dr. Jane Eggerstedt, Internal Medicine Chief Dr. Gunjan Kahlon and Psychiatry Professor Dr. James Patterson. Cost for the Mini Med School is $40, and includes a white lab coat for each participant. Past MMDs (Mini Med Doctors) are welcome to join again. Cost for past participants is $20, with no white coat included. The session is limited to 35 participants to allow for an interactive format, so please register early. Classes begin February 19th and meet each Tuesday evening from 5:30 to 7:30 pm through March 19th. Schedule for 2013: (3rd Thursday of every other month) March 21 Published December 7, 2012 Dr. William Jenkins, Interim President of the LSU System, will be holding a town hall meeting on the campus of LSU Health Shreveport on Tuesday, December 11. The meeting is open to the public and will be held at 10:30 a.m. in the Medical School Auditorium, Room 1-400. The purpose of the meeting is to get public input on the hospital reorganization process. The goal is to gather information and to correct any misinformation.
