Juan Zuniga

An Evening for Healers 2018

Juan Zuniga and his mom, Enedina, were closing their family’s restaurant, El Compadre, for the evening when the night took a tragic turn. Juan was shot twice in the chest while protecting his mother from armed robbers. He was rushed to Ochsner LSU Health where doctors began work immediately to save his life. Juan lost his right lung, received over 30 units of blood, and was placed on two rounds of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO). After more than a month in the hospital and four months of rehabilitation, Juan recovered from the unimaginable with the help of his family, faith, and community support.

The LSU Health Sciences Foundation supports LSU Health Shreveport and Ochsner LSU Health’s mission to teach, heal, discover, and innovate. Over the past 15 years, An Evening for Healers has raised over $6.1 million for our region’s only academic health center.

Your gift empowers future healthcare leaders, recruits world-class faculty, and drives transformational research.

Donations in honor of tonight’s healers are met with deep gratitude.
